maria lawas
Director, Cognitive Development Educational Therapist
As a homeschool mom of five multi-age children, preschool to high school years, Maria has developed a passion for helping other homeschoolers succeed. It has been an honor for her to direct other families in the right direction as they pursue home education.
In 2019, after learning that some of her children have mental and learning disabilities, she pursued further specialized training and education in order to help improve their cognitive abilities and decrease learning, emotional, and social challenges. She obtained her Cognitive Developmental Therapy Certification after completing the course training under Dr. Carol Brown at Equipping Minds, an international institution, creating and implementing a holistic multi-disciplinary approach for quality intervention to advance cognitive development and academic success. Additionally, she was given the opportunity to receive one-on-one training from Margaret Walsh, the founder of Secret Gardens Educational Pathway, in research-proven reading and literacy remediation therapy. She is also skilled in implementing the Orton-Gillingham Approach, which is an effective, cognitive, multisensory, systematic teaching method. Furthermore, she is qualified to interpret academic and neuropsychological tests and make appropriate recommendations and interventions related to visual, auditory, vestibular, and cognitive systems. In order to improve her teaching abilities, she enrolls in continuing education (CE) courses on a regular basis. Maria's passion, knowledge and experience have led her to establish a local co-op, Sancta Familia, where she teaches a variety of subjects including religion, math, English, history, science, and more. As a result of all the advice she has received from HSLDA and the knowledge she continues to acquire throughout her homeschool journey, Maria gives HSLDA the credit for all the help she has received throughout the years. She highly encourages every homeschooler to become an HSLDA member: https://hslda.org/.
